Connected speaker manufacturer Sonos has refreshed its iconic subwoofer - the SUB - with a fresh new white colour scheme. The white SUB will be available in Australian stores from December 1, is identical to the original black SUB in terms of hardware and performance, and still costs $999.
The SUB wirelessly pairs with any other Sonos speaker, including the Play:5, Play:3, Play:1, and Playbar. Since the SUB is just a subwoofer, it won't actually do anything unless you another Sonos device to group it with. When connected, the SUB lets your other Sonos speakers deal with midrange and treble. The SUB offers frequency response down to 25Hz, but from our experience, it never drowns out the mids and highs.
While the SUB is designed for wireless usage, an Ethernet port can be used to hook it to a wired network.
JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Myer, and specialty retailers will all be ranging the white Sonos SUB. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether Sonos will release a white Playbar to match the new subwoofer.
For those not familiar with the brand, Sonos builds speakers that connect to your home wireless network. This allows you to control multiple speakers from a companion app on either your smartphone or PC. Multiple speakers can be grouped to play the same song, or alternatively, each speaker can play a different track at the same time. They're almost like Bluetooth speakers on steroids.
While there's plenty of manufacturers fighting for a slice of the connected audio pie, Sonos stands out due to tight integration between hardware and software, simple setup, and the extensive list of third party streaming services it integrates with.
